In comparison to most beaches we visited in Thailand, Ao Nang was average. It benefits from being backed by a road with plenty of shops and restaurants which are convenient for food and drink and also makes the beach highly accessible, but simultaneously this degrades the 'natural' feeling that many Thai beaches are renowned for. As such, the beach is very busy and it can be difficult to find shade, in addition there are lots of long boats polluting the water and making noise. Nevertheless, the sand is quite nice and the water is perfectly suitable for swimming. At high tide there is very little beach between the sea and the coastal wall, and another point to mention is the beach sellers which are a plenty and can become a nuisance. Overall, it is fine for somewhere to relax and swim, but there are other beaches I would recommend before Ao Nang.
